Reaction Rates (10.1) Flashcards
What is the rate of reaction?
How fast a product is made
or
How fast a reactant is used up
What is the equation of the rate of reaction?
Rate = Change in Concentration/Time
What are the units for the rate of reaction?
mol dm-3 S-1
Why is the rate of reaction the fastest at the start of the reaction?
Because the reactants are at their highest concentration at the beginning of the reaction
What is the rate of reactant when the reaction is finished/reactant is used up?
Zero
What factors affect the rate of reaction?
-Concentration/Pressure of gasses
-Temperature
-Catalysts
-Solid reactant’s surface area
What is collision theory?
The theory that states that reacting particles need to collide for a reaction to occur.
What makes a collision effective?
-Particles colliding in the right orientation
-Particles having enough energy to overcome the activation energy
How does increasing the concentration/gas pressure affect the rate of reaction.
The particles being closer together means that more particles will collide effectively per unit of time.
What are the two main ways that you can monitor the progress of a reaction?
-The decrease of concentration of a reactant
-The increase of concentration of a product
What are some other measurable properties you can use to monitor the progress of reaction?
-Colour changes
-Mass of reactants/products
-Gas volume
How can you determine the rate of reaction of gaseous reactions?
-Monitoring the loss of mass of the reactants using a scale
-Monitoring the volume of gas produced at regular time intervals with gas collection
