reaction of oxides Flashcards
basic oxides (metallic oxide)
react only with acids to form salt and hydrogen gas
soluble in water:
alkalis eg potassium oxide (K2O), sodium oxide (Na2O), lithium oxide(Li2O), calcium oxide(CaO), Barium oxide (BaO)
insoluble in water:
magnesium oxide (MgO), copper (II) oxide (CuO), iron(II) oxide (FeO), iron (III) oxide(Fe2O3)
amphoteric oxides (metallic oxide)
reacts with alkalis and acids to form salt and water
insoluble in water
eg. zinc oxide (ZnO)
acidic oxides (non-metallic oxides)
reacts only with alkalis to form salt and water
soluble in water:
nitrogen dioxide(NO2) , phosphorous(V) oxide (P2O5)
insoluble in water:
silicon dioxide (SiO2)
neutral oxides (non-metallic oxides)
does not react with an acid or base
insoluble in water
- carbon monoxide(CO), nitric oxide/nitrogen oxide (NO)
