What is Oxidation?
Loss of electrons
Gain of Oxygen
What is Reduction?
Gain of electrons
Loss of oxygen
Give two observations, zinc carbonate is added in excess:
1) White powder going to colourless (solid will dissolve)
2) Excess powder sink to the bottom
Ores
a rock from which metal can be extracted from( for profit)
Native metals are
unreactive
Eg. Au, Pt
Copper is obtained from its ore. Why wouldn’t this work for magnesium? (6m)
- An ore is a rock from which a metal can be extracted from for profit
- Copper is removed by carbon to displace our metal
- Magnesium is more reactive than carbon and needs electrolysis
- Copper+ carbon -> carbondioxide + copper
- In copper equation Cu is being reduced and C is being oxidised
- Mg is being reduced and C is being oxidised
