What ‘good’ mean?
That which is considered morally right, beneficial and to our advantage.
For example, giving to the homeless.
What is the meaning of ‘Evil’?
That which is considered extremely immoral, wicked and wrong
For example, human trafficking.
What is the meaning of ‘forgiveness’?
To grant pardon for a wrongdoing; to give up resentment and the desire to seek revenge against a wrongdoer.
For example, not holding hatred towards a family member’s murderer.
What is ‘Free Will’?
The ability to make choices voluntarily and independantly. The belief that nothing is pre-determined.
E.g. people have the freedom to chose who to marry
What does ‘justice’ mean?
Fairness; where everyone has equal provisions and opportunity
E.g. women’s rights
What is the meaning of ‘morality’?
Principles and standards determining which actions are right or wrong
e.g. treating others as you want to be
What is ‘punishment’?
A penalty given to someone for a crime or wrong they have done.
E.g a fine
What is ‘sin’?
Deliberate immoral action, breaking a religious or moral law
E.g. Adultery
What is ‘suffering’?
Pain or distress caused by injury, illness or loss. Suffering can be physical, emotional/psychologic or spiritual.
E.g. gas lighting
What is absolute morality?
When a person has a principle* and never alters it, applying this to all situations, no matter what.
* such as ‘it is wrong to kill’
Examples = Catholics, Quaker Christians
What is ‘relative morality’?
When a person holds a moral but is ready to adapt or adjust it in certain situations.
For example, Church of England or humanists.
How do we make moral decisions?
- conscience
- the law
- religious teachings
- past experiences
- reason/logic
What are the aims of punishment?
- Protection
- Retribution
- Deterence
- Reformation
- Vindication
- Reparation
