3 Arguments for God’s existence
cosmological
teleological
ontological
Cosmological arguments
how could earth and species be created without an all-powerful figure.
Teleological arguments
Claims universe design is so perfect so there must be a designer.
Ontological arguments
If God is all powerful, then he must exist and if he is not all powerful then he doesn’t exist.
The Problem of Evil
The existence of evil and suffering are incompatible with the existence of an all good and powerful God.
The problem of evil - Hume and Epicurus
say that if God is willing to prevent evil but not able, then he is impotent, if he is able, but not willing then he is malevolent and if he is both able and willing, why do we have evil?
inconsistent Triad
Three ideas but only two of them can be true. there is clear evidence and experience of evil, either God is not all-powerful (i.e. He cannot stop evil) or God is not loving and good (i.e. He does not love us or care enough to stop evil).
Nietzsche
Nietzsche believed that suffering is necessary for the good things in life to be recognized. He also believed that suffering makes us stronger.
Using Nietzsche’s theory, the relationship between suffering, religion and behavior
both suffering and religion effect our behaviour. Suffering will make us stronger and make the good parts of life better which will change our outlook on life and our behaviour. While religion “smothers us in morality and self-loathing” which makes us weaker and not enjoy the good parts of life as much.
Judaism view of the creation of evil
- Many Jews believe that the origin of evil was from the first sin of Adam and Eve
- Jews believe that when humans choose to be evil it causes suffering but because God is loving and caring he helps prevent suffering.
Why some do jews believe suffering is a good thing
- Some Jews believe that suffering brings people closer to God and in times of trouble people turn to religion and suffering helps people to empathies.
What was Frankl’s belief
The deepest desire is meaning and when meaning is found, you can survive suffering and evil.
the difference between Frankle and the Jewish beliefs
Jewish people believe that suffering brings you closer to God and provides you with a stronger base of empathy while Frankl believes that if you find the meaning in life you can overcome all suffering.
Christianity’s view of sin
- Believe that the origin of sin was the “First Sin” with Adam and Eve
- They believe that suffering s a consequence from the sins that humans commit against God.
what is Augustine’s belief
Augustine says that we were created as perfect sin free people, but sin comes from us making poor decisions due to our freedom that God is not responsible for.
what is Irenaeus’s belief
Irenaeus believed that we were made imperfect by God and able to sin so we can choose to do the right thing and become good people of God.
difference between Augustine and Irenaeus.
- Augustine believes that we were created as perfect sin free people, but sin comes from us making poor decisions due to our freedom that God is not responsible for. - - - While Irenaeus believes that we were made imperfect by God and able to sin so we can become good people of God.
what is the Stanford prision experiment
Setup: Participants were assigned as guards or prisoners in a mock prison.
Purpose: To study how power dynamics and roles affect behavior in a simulated prison environment.
what were the findings from the prison experiment
Findings: Guards acted abusively, and prisoners experienced severe stress, highlighting the impact of situational roles on behavior.
Role of Situational Factors: Demonstrated how environment and roles can drastically influence behavior.
why was it stopped early
Ethical Concerns: The study was halted early due to severe distress and ethical issues with participant treatment.
