Q

What was great schism

A

The Great Schism was the beginning of the seperation of the church- the Catholic Church and the Orthodox Church. The arguement was about the fact that the Catholic church believed that the authority of the Pope should not be questioned as he is a successor of St Peter however the Orthodox church believed that the Pope should not have full authority to determine Christian beliefs. The arguement was also about the parts of the Holy Trinity. Michael Cerularius, head of the Orthodox Church in Constantinople, accused the Roman Catholic Church of holding false beliefs. There could be no more serious charge. Pope Leo X denied that his Church was in error and condemned the Orthodox Church in return. The Pope then died. In the same year Cardinal Humbert of France excommunicated the entire Orthodox Church! Constantinople then claimed the pope had no authority over theorthodox church and claimed total indipendence from the Roman Catholic Church.

Q

Who was st alban

A

St Alban was a soldier in the Roman Army, who didn’t know about Christianity and hid a catholic priest in his house. The priest told Alban about God and Alban now understood his religion and became Christian. When Roman soldiers came to arrest the priest, he told the, he was the priest and was put to death after saying he loves and worships Jesus. When people say Alban’s faith and sacrifice, many converted to Christianity and the place where he was killed became a shrine.

Q

Process of electing new pope

A

After the unfortunate death or resigning of the Pope a week after the 9 days of mourning. To start this election a group of cardinals meet in the vatican which are known as a conclave. They meet and pray in the sistine chapel and then are locked in the chapel until a new pope is chosen. They start the first round of votes and if the cardinal gets 2/3 plus one votes he is then chosen as pope but if this doesnt happen they are burned with a black smoke which means the election process is still on going. If a
• pope isnt chosen in 2 weeks all they need is 1/2 plus one votes and once they have finally voted for the priest the paper is burned without chemicals and the people cheer in hapiness. The pope is then brought to the balcony of the sistine chapel and announced to the whole world with “habemus papam” “we have a pope”.

Q

What are papal encyclicals

A

Papal encyclicals are letters written by the Pope, addressing important issues and providing guidance on matters of faith and morals. While not infallible, they are considered authoritative teachings and demand the religious submission of the intellect and will from the faithful. Encyclicals shed light on global issues from a moral and theological perspective, helping everyone better understand how to apply the teachings of Sacred Scripture and Tradition to contemporary issues. They have inspired revolutions, changed cultures, and addressed a wide range of topics, often being ahead of their time. In summary, papal encyclicals are significant documents that have a profound impact on both the Church and the world.

Q

4 stages to saint hood

A
  • Diocesan Phase:servant of god
    ◦ The process begins in the diocese where the individual died or was martyred.
    ◦ The diocese, religious order, association, or lay person(s) requesting the cause asks the diocesan bishop to open an investigation into the person’s life or martyrdom.
  • Roman Phase:
    ◦ If the diocesan investigation yields positive results, the cause is then taken up by the Congregation for the Causes of Saints in Rome.
    ◦ A panel of theologians and cardinals reviews the evidence to ensure its theological soundness.
    ◦ If the panel’s decision is favorable, the Pope proclaims that the individual demonstrated heroic virtue and is worthy of public veneration, bestowing upon them the title “Venerable.”
  • Beatification:
    ◦ For beatification, one miracle attributed to the candidate’s intercession is required.
    ◦ After the miracle is verified, the Pope issues a decree declaring the person “Blessed.”
  • Canonization:
    ◦ For canonization, a second miracle (in most cases) is required and must occur after the beatification.
    ◦ Once the second miracle is verified, the Pope declares the person a saint, worthy of universal veneration by the Church.

Q

What is a cardinal

A

A cardinal is a senior member of the clergy of the Catholic Church, appointed by the Pope, and typically holds the title for life. The most solemn responsibility of the cardinals is to elect a new pope in a conclave when the Holy See is vacant. They provide the Pope with assistance in the administration of the Church and act as his principal counselors. Cardinals are drawn from various backgrounds, with most being bishops and archbishops leading dioceses and archdioceses around the world. They also contribute to the governance of the Church, act as papal envoys, and may be deputed by the Pope for special pastoral tasks. Additionally, they are available to the Roman Pontiff, either acting collegially or individually, when summoned to deal with questions of major importance. A cardinal’s most notable role is to serve as a papal elector, and it is a lifetime title, but the ability to vote for a successor pope ceases at a cardinal’s 80th birthday

4 ways st maximilian kolbe responded to evil and suffering

A

Chose love, not hatred - Despite the cruelty inflicted upon him at Auschwitz, Kolbe refused to give in to hatred and encouraged others to love.

Provided spiritual support - He continued acting as a priest, hearing confessions, celebrating Mass when possible, and giving spiritual talks to uplift the spirits of fellow prisoners.

Sacrificed his life for another - In the ultimate act of love, Kolbe volunteered to take the place of a fellow prisoner condemned to death by starvation, giving his own life.

Kept strong faith and hope - His unwavering faith in God’s mercy and hope for good to ultimately triumph over evil inspired many around him to persevere.

69
Q

3 arguements for voluntary euthanasia and 3 against

A

In my opinion,I think they should be allowed as if someone is terminally ill,not enjoying life at all they should have a choice instead of suffering in hospitals, being under heavy medication which only makes them hate the rest of the life they have but euthanasia would allow people to enjoy the last few months or days and let them know that they wont have to suffer for much longer.

It could end the pain and suffering of the patients relatives whatching there family member slowly dieing

It would help others to face death if they realized they could die with dignity.

Other opinions are,

In my opinion I think euthanasia should not be legal as it allows people if they arent not terminally ill or have a life threatening injury to have a easy exit and this not only causes grief and mourning on the family it could also affect parents with children.Instead they should have people helping these people in these situations and not allow them to go for the easy exit.

Life is a gift from god only god can decide when to end it

Old people might feel they are a nuisance to others and opt for euthanasia when in their hearts
they want to continue living.
