An official count or survey especially of a population
Census
An approach to studying religion and worldviews that focuses on living. It looks at the different ways in which people behave.

Some people’s worldviews will be shaped strongly by the organisations/ institutions they belong to e.g. the Catholic Church

Original or most basic meaning - e.g. a literal reading of the Bible sees the words as representing the basic facts

An error in reasoning

Idea that texts do not contain facts, but rather have symbolic and metaphorical meaning.
Non-literal
not influenced by personal feelings or opinions in considering and representing facts
Objective
An approach to studying religion and worldviews that focuses on thinking. It considers the big questions like
‘does God exist?’
Philosophy
Different religions & worldviews living alongside one another
Pluralism
establishing the truth of a statement
Proof
Information presented as quantities (numbers and statistics)
Quantitative data
Information that is descriptive, and cannot easily be measured, often gained through conversations and observation.
Qualitative data
Difficult to define; a system of faith or belief, often associated with a divine being (God)
Religion
Not connected with religious or spiritual matters
Secular
Process of religion/ spirituality becoming less significant in society
secularisation
A sense of connection to something bigger than ourselves; a search for meaning in life; takes many forms
Spirituality
based on or influenced by personal feelings, tastes, or opinions.
Subjective
An approach to studying religion and worldviews that focuses on believing. It looks at where beliefs come from, how they have changed over time, how they are applied.
Theology
Someone who believes in god
Theist
Giving a true picture; used to evaluate the truthfulness of research in social sciences
Validity
A particular way of understanding the world e.g. an atheist would not say they are religious but they clearly have a worldview (i.e. there is no God)
