Q

What are the current recommendations for treatment strategies of the different types of essential HTN?

A
  • Elevated - advise lifestyle changes
  • Stage 1 - advise lifestyle changes unless the patient already lives an appropriate lifestyle or is unlikely to change their lifestyle. In those cases you prescribe one first line agent.
  • Stage 2 - you prescribe two first line drugs of different classes. If BP is still not controlled, a third drug (usually a vasodilator) is prescribed.
