Describe the 4 categories of hypertension. What are the current guidelines recommended that the BP goal should be after HTN treatment?

List the classes of drugs in the first-line, second-line, and other categories of antihypertensives.

- First Line - ACEI, ARB, Ca++ channel blockers, thiazides
- Second Line - ß-blockers, aldosterone antagonists
- Other - loop diuretics, α-blockers, direct vasodilators, central α2-agonists, renin inhibitors

What are the current recommendations for treatment strategies of the different types of essential HTN?
A
- Elevated - advise lifestyle changes
- Stage 1 - advise lifestyle changes unless the patient already lives an appropriate lifestyle or is unlikely to change their lifestyle. In those cases you prescribe one first line agent.
- Stage 2 - you prescribe two first line drugs of different classes. If BP is still not controlled, a third drug (usually a vasodilator) is prescribed.
