RCA Area Designations Flashcards
Describe the characteristics of a Radiation Area
Accessible area in which the radiation level could result in a dose equivalent of 5 mRem in 1 hour at 30 cm.
Demarcated by a sign displaying a radiation symbol and “CAUTION RADIATION AREA”
Describe the characteristics of a High Radiation Area
Accessible area in which radiation levels could result in a dose equivalent in excess of 100 mRem in 1 hour at 30 cm.
Demarcated by a sign displaying a radiation symbol and “CAUTION HIGH RADIATION AREA” or “DANGER HIGH RADIATION AREA”.
Describe the characteristics of a Locked High Radiation Area
Accessible area in which radiation levels could result in a dose equivalent in excess of 1000 mRem in 1 hour at 30 cm.
Demarcated by a stop sign shaped sign displaying a radiation symbol and “DANGER LOCKED HIGH RADIATION AREA” and “RP BRIEF REQUIRED FOR ENTRY”.
Entry ways are either locked with a unique key or roped off and posted with a flashing light if not lockable.
Describe the characteristics of a Very High Radiation Area
Accessible area in which radiation levels could result in an individual receiving an absorbed dose in excess of 500 Rads in 1 hour at 1 meter.
Demarcated by a stop sign shaped sign displaying a radiation symbol and “GRAVE DANGER VERY HIGH RADIATION AREA”.
Controls are made to ensure that an individual is not able to gain unauthorized or inadvertent access.
Describe the characteristics of a Contamination Area
An area where loose surface contamination may exceed 1000 dpm beta-gamma on 100 cm² smear or 20 dpm/100 cm² of alpha.
Demarcated by signs and/or tape displaying radiation symbols and “CAUTION CONTAMINATION AREA” and “RP BRIEF REQUIRED FOR ENTRY”.
Describe the characteristics of a High Contamination Area
An area where average contamination levels are or are anticipated to be >or= 100,000 dpm/100 cm².
Demarcated by signs and/or tape displaying radiation symbols and “CAUTION HIGH CONTAMINATION AREA” or “DANGER HIGH CONTAMINATION AREA”.
