Razor Cutting Flashcards
Name the 8 razor techniques.
Pencilling
Beveling
Freehand
Twisting
Planing
Sliding
Tapering
Elevating
How is the sliding technique done?
Is done using one motion to cut the section of hair from short to long in one movement.
How do you hold the razor while doing the sliding technique?
Perpendicular to the section |
How do we start the sliding technique?
The sliding requires narrow sections and an extra sharp blade.
Begin at the shortest length and slice through to the longest length.
The razor stays on the hair for the whole movement.
What effect does the sliding technique give?
Removes only length.
Used to create a dramatic increase in length and is often used around the face.
What hair does the sliding technique need to be done on?
Can be done on all hair types.
How do we perform the pencilling technique
Involves holding the razor like a pencil and Cutting vertically into the section of hair with the point of the blade.
What sectioning is used for pencilling?
Horizontal and held with tension.
What effect does pencilling give?
Removes bulk and gives movement to the hair.
When is pencilling used?
Often used for dinner pieces of hair and personalising a cut.
How is the freehand technique done?
Cutting the hair at a natural fall such as razor over comb or personalising a finished cut.
What effect does freehand have?
Used to remove length and/or bulk depending on where and how it’s used.
When is freehand used?
To finish the style, refine a shape or soften weight distribution.
How is the beveling technique done?
Holding the horizontal section of hair between the fingers, lie the razor on the top of the finger with the blade facing the hair.
The fingers are then turned either forward or backward to create the bevel up or under.
What effect does beveling three hair give?
Gives a bear solid result, removing length while giving direction.
Good for encouraging a solid form to turn under our up.
Peeling is a similar technique used on the end of the hair, usually in the interior to create textured ends when removing the length
How is the twisting technique done?
Requires small sections of hair to be twisted roots to ends then notched using a razor down the twisted Meche.
The hair is twisted in one direction then cut in the other.
What effect does twisting give?
Removes bulk and is used to give texture to the cut.
How is planing done?
The razor lies in the section of hair and is moved back and forwards along the top of the section.
The angle of the blade determines how much hair is planned off in the outer layer.
Both the section and the blade is horizontal.
What effect does planing give?
Removes bulk. Technique is used to lighten the hair. Can be done on top or underneath the section to make the hair flick out or under.
Not intended to remove length.
How is elevating done?
Used under hair strand done in one motion.
What hair can elevating be done on?
On all hair types as it removes length and not bulk.
How is tapering technique done?
Cutting the mesh from the side of the section with the razor perpendicular to the mesh.
A sliding action where the razor leaves and returns to the mesh.
Deepening the angle of the razor will increase the amount of hair removed.
The length of the taper can also be altered by lengthening the backward and forwards motion.
What is the effect of long tapering?
Long taper: Removes most bulk and some length. Creates a very feathered result
What is the effect of medium tapering?
Removes medium bulk and some length. Creates a less feathered result, better for finer hair.
What is the effect of short tapering?
Removes minimal bulk and can remove length. Can create a fairly blunt result of the taper is very short. Keeps the maximum bulk in the hair while still allowing for some taper in the ends.
