Raw Materials Flashcards
Give typical raw materials
● Coal (rock, needs to be mined)
● Natural Gas (gas)
● Shale Gas (gas)
● Crude Oil (oil, needs to be drilled)
Sources of SynGas
● Coal Gasification
● Heavy Oil Gasification
● Steam Reforming
Differentiate High Calorific versus Low Calorific Natural Gas
● High Cal - High methane content
● Low Cal - Low methane conttent. Has N₂ and CO₂
What is Shale Gas?
Natural gas that is trapped within shale formations.
What is Methyl Hydrate?
● Typically found along cliffs and ravine near ocean
● Pipes under sea also can have formation of Methyl Hydrate
How to prevent Methyl Hydrate Blow out?
● Use glycol (inhibitor)
● Maintain constant temp (not low temp)
● Maintain low pressure
Differentiate Coal versus Crude Oil
● Coal is mined and can be directly used as source of energy
● Crude oil is drilled and needs to be refined to have further use
