Rational Numbers Flashcards
What is a unit fraction?
A fraction with a numerator of 1. 1/3, 1/8 and 1/12 are unit fractions.
What is a multiple?
The product of a number and any whole number. 2x4=8, 8 is a multiple of 2, 8 is a multiple of 4.
What is a coordinate plane?
A two-dimensional space formed by two perpendicular number lines called axes.
What are quadrants?
The four spaces of the coordinate plane that are created when the x-axis and y-axis intersect at the origin.
What is a factor pair?
Two numbers that are multiplied together to give a product, 2x4=8 2 and 4 are a factor pair.
What is a prime factorization?
A way to write a composite number as a product of prime numbers. The prime factorization of 12 is 2x2x3.
What is a positive number?
A number greater than 0.
What is a negative number?
a number less than 0.
What is a x-coordinate?
A point’s horizontal distance from the origin along the x-axis.
What is a y-coordinate?
A point’s vertical distance from the origin along the y-axis.
What are integers?
The set of whole numbers and their opposites.
What is a origin?
The point (0,0) where the x-axis and y-axis intersect.
What is an absolute value?
A number’s distance from 0 on the number line.
What is and additive inverses?
Two numbers whose sum is 0.
What are opposites?
Two numbers are opposite if they are the same distance from 0 on the number line but on opposite sides of 0. 2 is a positive number, -2 is a negative number, 2 and -2 are opposites.
