A UNIT FRACTION is a fraction with a numerator of 1.
1/3, 1/8, and 1,12 are UNIT FRACTIONS.
When you multiply a number by its MULTIPLICATIVE INVERSE the product is 1.
9 x 1/9 =1 The fraction 1/9 is the MULTIPLICATIVE INVERSE of 9.
RECIPROCAL: the multiplicative inverse of a number.
With fractions, the numerator and denominator are switched.
5/8 x 8/5 = 1
8/5 is the RECIPROCAL of 5/8
PARTIAL QUOTIENT: a strategy used to divide multi-digit numbers
The quotients you get in each step are called “PARTIAL QUOTIENTS.”
FACTOR: a number you multiply.
2 x 4 = 8
2 is a FACTOR of 8.
4 is a FACTOR of 8.
FACTOR PAIR: two numbers that are multiplied together to give a product.
2 x 4 = 8
2 and 4 are a FACTOR PAIR.
PRIME FACTORIZATION: a way to write a composite number as a product of prime numbers.
The PRIME FACTORIZATION of 12 is 2 x 2 x 3.
GREATEST COMMON FACTOR(GCF): the greatsest factor two numbers have in common.
Factors of 15:
1,3,5,15
Factors of 20:
1,2,4,5,10,20
The GCF is 5.
MULTIPLE: the product of a number and any whole number.
2 x 4 = 8
8 is a MULTIPLE of 2.
8 is a MULTIPLE of 4.
LEAST COMMON MULTIPLE(LCM): the lowest multiple shared by two or more numbers.
Multiples of 15:
15,30,45,60,75…
Multiples of 20:
20,40,60,80,100…
The LCM is 60.
COORDINATE PLANE
A 2d space formed by two perpendicular number lines called axes.
QUADRANTS
The four spaces of the coordinate plane that are created when the
x-axis and y-axis intersect at the origin.
ORIGIN
The point (0,0) where the x-axis and y-axis intersect.
ORDERED PAIR
A pair of numbers (x,y) that describe the location of a point on the coordinate plane.
OPPOSITES: Two numbers are opposites if they are the same distance from 0 on the number line but on opposites sides of 0.
2 is a positive number.
-2 is a negative number.
2 and -2 are opposites.
