Ratio Flashcards
How do you simplify a ratio?
Divide all parts of a ratio by their greatest common factor
or
Divide all parts of a ratio by the same number, until they can’t be divided any further
Do all ratios have two parts?
No, they can have two, three, or even more parts
If the parts of a ratio have different units, what step should you take before solving?
Convert them so they are both in the same unit (the smaller unit is usually better)
Ratios can be “part-to-part” or “part-to-whole”. Which one is the same as a fraction?
Part to whole
The part is the numerator and the whole is the denominator
A ratio compares two ____
quantities (the amount of something - how many or how much)
A special type of ratio where the quantities are different units is called a ____
eg. kilometers per hour, grams per liter, calories per serving
Rate
eg. speed, tax rate, heart rate, literacy rate, birth rate, exchange rate, frequency, density
If you have a ratio with decimals, what step should you take before simplifying?
Remove the decimals by multiplying all quantities by 10, 100, 1000, etc. (these are called powers of 10)
Then simplify
If you have a ratio with fractions, what step should you take before simplifying?
Change the fractions so that they have a common denominator, then change them into whole numbers by multiplying all parts by the denominator
If you need to simplify a ratio but the numbers are large and you don’t know the greatest common factor, what can you do?
Divide it in smaller steps until you find the simplest form
Different ratios that become the same when simplified are called ____
Equivalent ratios
