Rates, Types, Balancing Reactions Flashcards
A characteristic of matter that you can observe or measure without changing the identity of the matter.
Physical change
Chemical Change
A change in matter in which the substances that make up the matter change into other substances with different chemical and physical properties. (Foaming, fizzing, temperature change, color change, fire)
Chemical reactions that absorb thermal energy.
Endothermic
Chemical reactions that release thermal energy.
Exothermic
Substance that increases the reaction rate.
Catalyst
Substance that decreases the reaction rate.
Inhibitor
Increases reaction rate
Surface area, concentration/pressure, temperature.
Two or more substances combine to form a new compound.
Synthesis
One compound breaks down and forms two or more substances.
Decomposition.
A chemical reaction in which a substance combines with oxygen and releases energy.
Combustion
One element replaces another element in a compound.
Single replacement
Two or more substances switch, forming a new compound.
Double replacement
Ca+02—-> CaO
2Ca + O2—> 2CaO2
AlCl3—>Al+Cl2
2AlCl3—> 2Al+3Cl2
