Rates, Types, And Balancing Reactions Flashcards
Physical change
A characteristic of matter that you can observe or measure without the identity of that matter. (Changing the states of matter.)
Chemical change
A change in matter in which the substances that make up the matter change into other substances with different chemical and physical properties.(foaming, fizzing, temperature change, color changes, fire.)
Endothermic
Chemical reactions that absorb thermal energy.
Exothermic
Chemical reactions that release thermal energy.
Catalyst
Substance that increases the reaction rate.
Inhibitor
Substance that decreases the reaction rate.
Increases reaction rate
Surface area, concentration/pressure, temperature.
Synthesis
Two or more substances combine to form a new compound.
Ca + O2 → CaO
Decomposition
One compound breaks down and forms two or more substances.
AlCl3 → Al + Cl
Combustion
A chemical reaction in which a substance combines with oxygen and releases energy.
CH4 + O2 → CO2 + H2O
Single replacement
One element replaces another element in a compound.
Mg + HCl → MgCl2 + H2
Double replacement
Two or more substances switch, forming a new compound.
BaBr2 + NaSO4 → BaSO4 + NaBr
Ca + O2 → CaO
2Ca + O2 → 2CaO2
AlCl3 → Al + Cl2
2AlCl3 → 2Al + 3Cl2
