Rates Of Reactions Flashcards
How can you increase the rate of a reaction?
Increase temperature, concentration, surface area or by adding a catalyst
Why does increasing surface area speed up reaction rate?
Increase in surface area = area available to react
What is the collision theory?
Chemicals cannot react with each other unless their molecules first collide with each other
How do we calculate the rate of a chemical reaction?
Rate = change in quantity÷ change in time
How does temperature increase the rate of a reaction?
Temperature increases movement of molecules making them more likely to collide
How does concentration increase the rate of a reaction?
Increase in concentration increases the number of molecules making them more likely to collide
Where on a graph can we tell when reaction rate is slowest?
The shallowest part of the graph
Where on a graph is the end point of a reaction?
Where the line becomes horizontal
Where on a graph is the reaction fastest?
Where the line is steepest
Why does the reaction rate always slow down?
Amount of reactants decreases,
Definition of catalyst
Increase the rate of a reaction without being used up in said reaction
Definition of enzyme
Biological catalyst, increases reaction rate without being used up
