Rates of Reaction Flashcards
Reaction Rate
The change in concentration per unit time of either a reactant or product
Factors affecting the rate of chemical reactions
Nature of reacting substances, surface area (solid), concentration (solution), pressure (gas), temperature and catalyst
Collision theory
Particles collide with sufficient energy (activation energy) to break old bonds in the right orientation to form new bonds.
Measuring rates of reactions
Measuring gas volumes, turbidity (precipitate formation), change of colour and the change of the mass of the reaction vessel
Catalyst
A substance that increase the rate of reaction but remains unchanged at the end of the reaction
How do catalysts function?
Some catalysts function by interacting with the reactants in such a way that the reaction follows an alternate path of lower activation energy
