rates of reaction Flashcards
4 factors which speed up reactions
- temp.
- conc.
- particle size
- catalysts
how does temp. increase rate of reaction
higher temp.=higher kinetic energy=more frequent collisions=more reactions
how does a higher conc. increase rate of reaction
higher conc.=more particles in same volume= more frequent collisions=more reactions
how does particle size increase rate of reaction
smaller particle size= more surface area= more frequent collisions= more reactions
how does a catalyst increase rate of reaction
catalysts speed up rate of reaction for both forward and backward equations as they provide a different route for a reaction with lower activation energy
what is the collision theory
not all collisions are successful. unless particles have minimum energy needed to react when they collide, no reactions occur
