Rates of reaction Flashcards
What is the rate if a chemical reaction?
How fast the reactants are changed into products .
What is one of the slowest chemical reactions ?
The rusting of iron.
What other slow chemical reactions are there ?
Chemical weathering - like acid rain damage to limestone buildings.
What is an example of a moderate speed reaction?
The metal magnesium reacting with an acid to produce a gentle stream of bubbles.
What is an example of a fast reaction ?
Burning is a fats reaction , but explosives are even faster and release a lot of gas. Explosive reactions are all over in a fraction of a second
How do you find the speed of reaction for a graph on the rate of reaction?
By recording the amount of product formed or reactant used up over time.
What is the relationship between the line on the graph for the rate of reaction and the rate of reaction ?
The steeper the line on the graph , the fast the rate of reaction.
How are the quickest reaction presented on a rate of reaction graph ?
The quickest reactions have the steepest lines and become flat in the least time.
What does the rate of reaction depend on ?
- The collision frequency of particles ( how often they collide). The more collisions there are the faster the reaction is. E.g. doubling the frequency of collision doubles the rate.
- The energy transferred during a collision. Particles have to collide with enough energy for the collision to be successful.
