Rates of reaction Flashcards
C8.1 - C8.4 Pg 128- 135
Explain why increasing the concentration increase the rate of reaction?
A higher concentration increases the frequency of successful collisions because there are more particles in the same volume.
Explain why a reaction happen at a faster rate at a higher temperature?
A higher temperature increases the frequency of successful collisions because the particles are moving faster and colliding with more energy.
Explain why increasing the surface area increases the rate of reaction?
A larger surface area increases the frequency of successful collisions because there are more particles exposed.
What does a catalyst do to the rate of reaction and why?
Catalysts provide an alternative route with a lower activation energy. Meaning more collisions will have energy greater than activation energy so the frequency of successful collisions will increase. so will the rate.
How to calculate rate?
quantity of reactant used / time taken or quantity pf product formed / time taken
What is collision theory?
Particles (atoms, molecules or ions) can only react if they collide with enough energy for the reaction to take place. The minimum amount of energy that particles must have to react is called the activation energy
