rates of reaction Flashcards
What is the rate of reaction measuring?
How fast a chemical reaction is occurring.
What are the two equations for measuring the mean rate of the reaction?
mean rate of reaction = quantity or reactant used ÷ time
mean rate of reaction = quantity of product used ÷ time
What must particles do in order to react?
collide with each other
What is activation energy?
minimum amount of reaction required for a chemical reaction to occur.
List five factors that affect the rate of reaction?
The 5 factors are:
Temperature
Pressure
Surface area
Concentration
Catalyst
How can you increase the surface area of a solid reactant?
To increase the surface area use smaller pieces of the solid.
Explain why changing the surface area has that affect?
Increasing the surface area increase the rate of reaction.
What does a catalyst do?
Speeds up a reaction without being used up.
What happens in a reversible reaction?
The products can react to form the reactants. Use a ⇌ arrow.
What is a dynamic equilibrium?
System where both the forward and backward reaction are taking place simultaneously and at the same rate.
State Le Chatilliers Principle?
If a change is made to the conditions of a system at equilibrium, then the position of the equilibrium moves to oppose that change in conditions.
