Rates Of Reaction Flashcards
How do you calculate the mean rate of reaction?
Mean rate of reaction = quantity of product formed/time taken
What is a tangent?
A straight line that just touches your the curve at a point.
What is the rate of a chemical reaction?
The frequency of successful collision. (Collisions per second)
What is a hypothesis
A hypothesis is a proposal that could explain a fact or an observation. It must be testable
What does a greater surface area to volume ratio mean for collisions per second?
There is more space for the particles to bounce and collide. This means a higher rate of reaction
What is collision theory?
Chemical reactions can only take place when the reacting particles collide with each other. The collision must have sufficient energy.
What does it mean if the product has less energy the reactant started with?
It is an exothermic reaction. Because energy must have been released
What is activation energy?
The activation energy is the minimum amount of energy that the particles must have in order to react.
What does increasing the temperature of a reaction mean?
The particles now have more energy meaning they move fast. And more collisions = higher rate of reaction
What is a catalyst?
Catalysts increase the rate of chemical reactions but are not used up during the reaction.
What do catalysts do?
They allow us to carry out reactions quickly without needing to increase the temp. This saves money. Because they are not used in the reaction, they can be reused.
