Rate of reaction Flashcards

1
Q

HOW ARE THE RATE OF REACTIONS DETERMINED

A
  • volume of gaseous product formed
  • mass of the reaction mixture during the reaction
  • change in: temperature; pH; conductivity; pressure

Q

METHODS TO MEASURE RATE OF REACTION

A
  • Measuring the volume of the gaseous product (collect in gas syringe)
  • Measure the change in mass of reaction mixture during the reaction (electronic balance to measure the content of flask)
  • Measuring time taken for color/ solid to (dis)appear (observe reaction through beaker and view black cross on white paper)

Q

DESCRIBE THE GRAPH OF THE Y-AXIS OVER TIME

A
  • The reaction is the fastest at the start
  • As the reaction progresses, the reaction becomes less vigorous as the reactants are gradually used up
  • Graph levels out the LR is used up
  • Reaction stops

Q

EXPLAIN HOW THE CONCENTRATION OF A SOLUTION INCREASES THE RATE OF REACTION

A

Increasing the concentration of a substance in solution means that there will be more particles per unit volume. Hence, the particle will collide more frequently with each other, resulting in more effective collisions. Therefore, there will be a higher ROR.
