Rate of Reaction Flashcards
What are the five factors that affect rate of reaction?
>Concentration of reactants >Temperature >Surface area >Pressure >Catalysts
How does temperature affect rate of reaction?
Temperature increases kinetic energy which then increases the rate of successful collisions leading to an increase in rate of reaction and more products made.
How does concentration affect rate of reaction?
The increase in concentration affects rate by having more particles in a given area, which increases the rate of successful collisions which increases rate of reaction.
How does surface area affect rate of reaction?
Surface area affects rate as the greater the S.A to volume ratio the greater the rate of reaction.
How does pressure affect rate of reaction?
Pressure affects rate of reaction as the greater the pressure within a given area, there would be an increase in successful collisions leading to an increased rate of reaction.
How do catalysts affect rate of reaction?
Catalysts affect rate of reactions by speeding up reactions without getting used up, decrease activation energy by identifying an alternative route for a reaction to occur.
What are the two ways we can measure the rate of reaction?
> How fast products are made
>How fast reactants are used up
What factors affect the position of equilibrium?
> Concentration
Temperature
Pressure
What is Le Chatelier’s principle
When you change the conditions of a reversible reaction, the system will try to counteract that change.
How does concentration affect equilibrium?
> If concentration of reactants are increased, equilibrium shifts to the right favouring the forward reaction which leads to more products formed.
If products are increased, equilibrium shifts to the right favouring the reverse reaction which leads to more reactants produced.
How does temperature affect equilibrium?
> If temperature is decreased, equilibrium will shift to the side that is exothermic which would increase the temperature back to normal.
If temperature is increased, equilibrium will shift to the side that is endothermic which would decrease the temp back to normal.
How does pressure affect equilibrium?
> If pressure is increased, equilibrium will shift to the side where the are fewer moles.
If pressure is decreased, equilibrium will shift to the side where there are more moles.
How does a catalyst affect equilibrium
It does not!
