Rate Of Reaction (3) Flashcards
How can the rate of reaction be increased?
By using powdered reactant rather than a lump
Describe an explosion
A very fast reaction which releases a large volume of gaseous products
Describe a catalyst
A substance which changes the rate of reaction and is unchanged at the end of the reaction
Understand why only a small amount of a catalyst is needed to catalyse large amounts of reactants and that a catalyst is specific to a particular reaction
Only a very small amount of catalyst is needed to increase the rate of reaction between large amounts of reactants.
Iron - making ammonia from nitrogen and hydrogen
Platinum- making ammonia from nitrogen and hydrogen
Vanadium oxide - making sulfuric acid
Explain the dangers of fine combustible powders in factories
The dust of the material can mix with air and could cause an explosion if there is a spark
Explain in terms of reacting particles and surface area the difference in the rate of reaction between a lump and powdered reactant
A lump has a small surface area so there are less particles exposed whereas a powdered reactant has a big surface area meaning that there are more particles exposed.
Explain in terms of collisions between reacting particles the difference in the rate of reaction between a lump and powdered reactant
A lump has few collisions as there are less particles on the surface for the other reactants to react with. Whereas a powdered reactant has more collisions as there are more particles on the surface for the other reactants to react with.
What can increase the rate of reaction?
The addition of a catalyst
