Rate Gyroscopes. Flashcards
What do they do?
A good use for them is to measure how much something turns. ANd then a rate Gyroscope will measure the rate, so how fast something is turning. (the spins helps the wheel to maintain its balance).
A device ethat resists changes to its oreintation because the wheel spins freely around an axel.
How big are they?
They have evolved overtime in terms of material makeup and size, weight etc. They used to be as big as big tv but now they can fit into apple watches.
Why are they useful ?
Because they can help you work out what direction something is pointing to. So they give position information - that is its main purpose. (they are often used in gaming e.g. mario kart, you the position data get feeded back to the phone. Even screen rotation, uses gyro sensors, from landscape to portrait).
What are they made of?
They are made of laser or fiber optic devices.
How does a Gyroscope work?
If the wheel spins fast enough then the acceleration of each segnment of the circle changes direction so quickly so that the segment doesn’t change in any direction at all its energy and motion go straight back into the wheel/circle. This can be summerised by the term Mass Moment of Inertia. This is the reason why the rotation axsis of any quickly rotating body is stable.
What is the Coriolis effect?
Objects in motion appearing to be deflected off of their intended course.
It is how rotations influence how we view the trajectories of moving objets. Therefore, if an object is spinning fast enough and projects another object the intended path will not be achieved and the object in motion will appear to be deflected off of its intended course = The Coriolis Effect..
What are MEMs Gyroscopes?
MICRO ELECTRO MECHANICAL SYSTEMS. Due to this gyroscopes and accelerometers were able to reduce significantly in size and price.
They are tiny devices that combine mechanical and electrcal compenents, like the size of a chip that contains moving parts(like vibrations, and electrical signals=the movement)
How did Nintendo use it?
With the Nintendo Wii it became special because it could track its own relative motion using MEMs.
How did Apple use it?
They were the first to put accelerometers and gyroscopes in their phones which allowed them to detect motion on six-axis.
What are some other device uses?
Straightening a photo.
Stability when taking photos to avoid motion blur.
Virtual design.
Apple watch can even tell the type of swimming stroke that you are completing.
What are Oscillating forces?
Oscillation is the repetitive variation, typically in time, of some measure about a central value or between two or more different states. The term vibration is precisely used to describe mechanical oscillation. Familiar examples of oscillation include a swinging pendulum and alternating current.
The three axes.
