Rate expression Flashcards
Rate expression
rate=k[A][B]2
k= rate constant
Zero order reactant
Change in its concentration does not change rate of reaction;not included in rate expression
Example of zero order reactant
Solids(e.g. magnesium)
Pure liquids
We cannot change the concentrations of these
First order reactant
Directly proportional i.e.
Doubling its concentration doubles rate of reaction
Second order reactant
Increasing concentration by factor x increases rate by factor x2
Which catalysts can be included in the rate expression?
Homogenous catalysts (not the solid ones)
How to calculate overall order
Add up the orders of the individual reactants
What does it mean if rate=k?
O order reaction. None of the reactants affect the rate.
Units of k for reaction of overall order 0
mol dm-3 s-1
Units of k for reaction of overall order 1
sec-1
Units of k for reaction of overall order 2
mol-1 dm3 s-1
Units of k for reaction of overall order 3
mol-2 dm6 s-1
