Rate Experiments Involving Gases Flashcards
How do you measure how surface area affects rate ?
1) set up marble chips , CO2, dilute HCl, beaker, stopwatch, syringe
2) measure volume of gas produced take readings regularly intervals
3) plot results, time on x , volume on y
4) repeat but marble more crunched up
5) repeat with same mass of chalk
Why does the graph show? About volume and time and particles?
1) the sooner it finishes the faster reaction
2) steeper gradient means fast rate of reaction
3) flat line means no more reaction
4) smaller particles have larger surface area
Finer particles are the sooner the reaction finishes,
Extra surface area gives a faster rate of reaction more gas involved
How does changing the concentration of acid affect rate?
Marble chips + hydrochloric acid is a good way to measure changing reactant concentration
What does the graph about acid concentration show?
Shows that a higher concentration gives a faster reaction with the reaction finishing sooner.
Repeat practical with different acid concentration and the same volume mass and surface area of chips.
