Rate and Extent of Chemcial Change Flashcards
What is the rate of reaction?
How fast the reactants turn into products
What 4 factors affect the rate of reaction?
1) The temperature
2) Concentration of solution or pressure of gas
3) Surface Area
4) A catalyst
What does an increased temperature do to a reaction?
Increased temperatures increase the energy of a particle, which causes an increase in the frequency of collisions
What does a higher concentration/ pressure do to a reaction?
Increases the pressure and therefore the frequency of collisions
What would happen if i broke a solid into bits before a reaction?
the particles would have more area to work on, so collisions would be more frequent
If i increases the surface area of a reactant, what would happen?
They’re would be more frequent collisions
What does a catalyst do?
Speeds up a reaction without being used up in the reaction
Name me 2 common catalysts
1) Enzymes, a catalyst made by living organisms
2) Transitional metals e.g cobalt and nicole
What is the name of the minimum amount of energy that particles must habe to react?
Activation energy
What does collision theory explain?
How various factors affect rates of reaction
How do catalysts increase the rate of reaction?
By providing a different pathway for the reaction that has a lower activation energy
In some chemical reactions, the products of the reaction can react to produce the original reactants. What are these reactions called?
Reversible Reactions
How can the direction of a reversible reaction be changed?
By changing the conditions of the reaction
What is equilibrium?
A state in a reaction where the rate of the forward reaction is equal to the rate of the reversible reaction
Will the concentration of reactants/products change if the equation has reached equilibrium?
No, they have reached a balance and won’t change
