What miraculous story do they tell about the birth of Rashi?
His father, a dealer in precious jewels, refused to sell a very rare and precious jewel to the Church. When they tried to force him, he threw it into the ocean rather than agree. A בת קול announced that in exchange he will have a son who will light up the world with his תורה. This was רש”י.
Why is it said about Rashi ‘the sun sets and the sun rises’?
Rashi was born in the same year that רבינו גרשום was נפתר, soon after the death of ר’ הי גאון.

In general he stuck to the פשט, but when that didn’t sufficiently answer the question, he turned to מדרשים, often mixing the פשט and the דרש.

Rashi was born in Troyes, France. He studied first with his father, and later in ישיבות in Mayence an Worms. He cultivated a vineyard for a living.
