Random Sampling Flashcards
What is Random Sampling? (2 main features)
- Random samples give every member of the wider population an equal chance of being selected for the researcher’s sample.
- They are more representative of population characteristics than other methods.
What is the 1st step of Random Sampling?
Obtain a complete list of all the individuals in the population from which the sample is to be taken = A Sampling Frame
What is the 2nd step of Random Sampling?
Assign a unique identifying number to each individual in the sampling frame
What is the 3rd step of Random Sampling?
Selects the sample members by using a random sampling technique.
List the 4 types of random sampling.
- Simple Random sampling
- Systematic Random sampling
- Stratified Random sampling
- Cluster sampling
Define Simple Random Sampling.
Select members from the sampling frame to create sample by generating numbers randomly.
Define Systematic Random sampling.
Create a sample by selecting individuals from the sampling frame at fixed intervals.
Define Stratified Random sampling
Dividing the members of the population into sub-groups (on the basis of gender, age, ethnicity, occupation, or income)
Define Cluster sampling (2 points).
- Randomly selecting a sample of naturally-occurring clusters from the population
