Q

Explain the example of the foreign affairs committee inquiry into Libya.

What does it tell us.

A

The committee in 2016 found that the U.K’s involvement in intervention in Libya, was ill convinced and the 2010 coalition cabinet was responsible.

This tells us the combing that’d demanded for due processes in U.K select committees can take too long for anyone to be properly held accountable.
In 2016, David Cameron was largely out of the public sphere and the news on Libya could be argued to have faded from public consciousness. People cared about other issues by that point, eg: Brexit.

The case of the Lord Brownlow refurbishment controversy.

A

Lord Brownlow is one of the richest men in the U.K.
It came to light around 2021 that there may have been a favors agreement between the PM Boris Johnson and Brownlow over him paying for Johnson’s lavish refurbishment of his Downing Street quarters.

This raised concerns about whether their were favors agreed upon that would compromise the mandate given to Johnson in 2019, and brought up the debate about the rich’s influence over parliament
