Q

describe the The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator

A

The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator is based on Jung’s theory of psychological types, although it construes them in more complex way than Jung envisaged.

First, it classifies people based on their being mainly interested in either the outer world or their inner world (Extraverts vs Introverts).

Next, it classifies them based on their prioritizing ways of understanding the word: in either concrete or abstract terms (Perceiving: iNtuitives vs Sensers, or in more rational or sentimental terms (Judging: Feelers vs Thinkers). This is where Jung stopped.

Finally, it classifies them as in turn prioritizing either a Perceiving function (either Sensing or Intuition) or a Judging function (either Thinking or Feeling) when interacting with the external world.

This yields a typology with 2 x 2 x 2 x 2 = 16 types. Example: INTP (Dr Aiden P Gregg).

In terms of the Big Five, Extraverts are higher in extraversion than Introverts lower, although the dimension is not quite the same.

Intuitives are higher in Openness than Sensers.

Feelers are higher in agreeableness than Thinkers.

Judgers are higher in conscientiousness than Perceivers.

Neuroticism is not simply represented. Jung deliberately left it out, possibly wanting a change of scene from troubled patients

Q

Which psychologist proposed that people could be classified as compliant, aggressive, or detached?

A

Karen Horney

Horney categorized neurotic styles in terms of inflexibly and unduly (a) moving toward people (compliant); (b) moving against people (aggressive); or (c) moving away from people (detached). Basically: doormats (high in neuroticism), abusers (low in agreeableness), and loners (low in extraversion).
