A

S - Setting up - plan your approach and arrange for privacy
P - Perception - find out what patient is like outside of the hospital
I - Invitation - understand what the patient/family knows and ask what they would like to know
K - Knowledge - provide info clearly and with a one-sentence headline of most important info and then stop
E - Emotions - acknowledge the patient/family emotion explicitly
S - Strategy - summarize and set out a medical plan of action. if they need more time, hold on this step
