What is an oxidation reaction?

A

Oxidation is any chemical reaction that involves the moving of electrons. Specifically, it means the side that gives away electrons. When iron reacts with oxygen it forms a chemical called rust. The iron is oxidized and the oxygen is reduced. Oxidation is the opposite of reduction.

Water:

Hydrogen Chloride (HCl) gas is acidic in nature as it dissolves in water (polar solvent) to dissasociate into H+ (Hydrogen ions) and Cl- (Chloride ions) ions. The H+ ions are what make it acidic.

It turns blue litmus paper red proving it’s acidic.

Methylbenzene:

However hydrogen chloride in methylbenzene does not ionise and therefore is not acidic.

Blue litmus paper stays blue.

Why is iron malleable?

A

Malleabilty and ductility are properties stemming from how metals bond on a molecular level.

Covalent and metallic bonds allow molecules to flex, before breaking. As opposed to ionic bonding, which is sensitive to being bent; ionic bonds are brittle

What makes iron (and other metals) a good conductor?

A

Iron, like all metals, has electrons in its outer shell that are not tightly bound to the nucleus.

Compared to non-metals, it’s easy for one or more electrons to escape from the outer shell and move freely in the metal’s crystal lattice.

It’s this population of free electrons that can be “recruited” and made to move in a particular direction, that makes metals good conductors.

Iron is a so-so conductor, but it’s not as good as copper or silver.
