I Isaiah 28:10

For a precept for a precept, a precept for a precept, a line for a line, a line for a line, a little there, a little there.

How is Isaiah to teach them??? Could be either “baby talk” or teach them very deliberately, “line by line.”

I Isaiah 11:1-9

And a shoot shall spring forth from the stem of Jesse, and a twig shall sprout from his roots. And the spirit of the Lord shall rest upon him, a spirit of wisdom and understanding, a spirit of counsel and heroism, a spirit of knowledge and fear of the Lord. And he shall be animated by the fear of the Lord, and neither with the sight of his eyes shall he judge, nor with the hearing of his ears shall he chastise. And he shall judge the poor justly, and he shall chastise with equity the humble of the earth, and he shall smite the earth with the rod of his mouth and with the breath of his lips he shall put the wicked to death. And righteousness shall be the girdle of his loins, and faith the girdle of his loins. And a wolf shall live with a lamb, and a leopard shall lie with a kid; and a calf and a lion cub and a fatling [shall lie] together, and a small child shall lead them. And a cow and a bear shall graze together, their children shall lie; and a lion, like cattle, shall eat straw. And an infant shall play over the hole of an old snake and over the eyeball of an adder, a weaned child shall stretch forth his hand. They shall neither harm nor destroy on all My holy mount, for the land shall be full of knowledge of the Lord as water covers the sea bed.

Future Davidic lineage. He will be a wonderful and wise leader and king. All will be good and peaceful. Isaiah’s beautiful vision of end time.

I Isaiah 11:11-13

And it shall come to pass that on that day, the Lord shall continue to apply His hand a second time to acquire the rest of His people, that will remain from Assyria and from Egypt and from Pathros and from Cush and from Elam and from Sumeria and from Hamath and from the islands of the sea. And He shall raise a banner to the nations, and He shall gather the lost of Israel, and the scattered ones of Judah He shall gather from the four corners of the earth. And the envy of Ephraim shall cease, and the adversaries of Judah shall be cut off; Ephraim shall not envy Judah, nor shall Judah vex Ephraim.

Micah 4:1-4

And it shall be at the end of the days, that the mountain of the Lord’s house shall be firmly established at the top of the mountains, and it shall be raised above the hills, and peoples shall stream upon it. And many nations shall go, and they shall say, “Come, let us go up to the Lord’s mount and to the house of the God of Jacob, and let Him teach us of His ways, and we will go in His paths,” for out of Zion shall the Torah come forth, and the word of the Lord from Jerusalem. And he shall judge between many peoples and reprove mighty nations afar off; and they shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruning hooks; nations shall not lift the sword against nation; neither shall they learn war anymore. And they shall dwell each man under his vine and under his fig tree, and no one shall make them move, for the mouth of the Lord of Hosts has spoken.

Great vision. Almost exactly the same as Isaiah’s (3:1-4)vision of the end of days.

1 On that day they read in the book of Moses in the hearing of the people; and therein was found written, that an Ammonite and a Moabite should not enter into the assembly of God for ever; 2 because they met not the children of Israel with bread and with water, but hired Balaam against them, to curse them; howbeit our God turned the curse into a blessing. 3 And it came to pass, when they had heard the law, that they separated from Israel all the alien mixture

I Isaiah 6:1-3

In the year of the death of King Uzziah, I saw the Lord sitting on a high and exalted throne, and His lower extremity filled the Temple. Seraphim stood above for Him, six wings, six wings to each one; with two he would cover his face, and with two he would cover his feet, and with two he would fly. And one called to the other and said, “Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of Hosts; the whole earth is full of His glory.”

Chapter 6 is the vision chapter. Isaiah’s call to prophesy. Vision of God on the throne, His robes fill the hall, angels everywhere.

Also, know that Isaiah’s unlikeliness to be a prophet is that he is impure of lips.

For the Lord of Hosts has a day over everyone proud and high, and over everyone exalted, and he shall become humble. And the loftiness of man shall be bowed down, and the haughtiness of man shall be humbled, and the Lord alone shall be exalted on that day. And the idols shall completely pass away.

I hate/reject your festivals, and I will not smell (the sacrifices) of your assemblies. For if you offer up to Me burnt- offerings and your meal-offerings, I will not accept [them], and the peace offerings of your fattened cattle I will not regard. Take away from Me the din of your songs, and the music of your lutes I will not hear. And justice shall be revealed like water, and righteousness like a mighty stream. Did you offer Me sacrifices and meal-offerings in the desert forty years, O house of Israel?

This reveals that Amos thinks there were no sacrifices during the desert wandering years.

Ezekiel 44:6-16

  1. And you shall say to the rebellious [people], to the House of Israel; So said the Lord God: You have done enough of all your abominations, O House of Israel. 7. By bringing aliens of uncircumcised heart and of uncircumcised flesh to be in My Sanctuary to profane My House, by offering up My food, fat and blood, and they broke My covenant in addition to all your abominations. 8. You did not keep the watch of My holy things, and you appointed keepers of My watch in My Sanctuary. 9. So said the Lord God: No alien of uncircumcised heart or of uncircumcised flesh may enter My Sanctuary, of any alien who is in the midst of the Children of Israel. 10. Only the Levites who distanced themselves from Me when Israel strayed from Me after their idols, and they shall bear their iniquity. 11. And they shall be ministers in My Sanctuary, appointed over the gates of the House; they shall slaughter the burnt offering and the sacrifices for the people, and they shall stand before them to serve them. 12. Because they served them before their idols and were for the House of Israel as a stumbling block of iniquity; therefore, I lifted My Hand upon them, says the Lord God, and they shall bear their iniquity. 13. And they shall not approach Me to serve Me, or to approach all My hallowed things in addition to the most holy things, and they shall bear their disgrace and their abominations, which they committed. 14. And I will make them keepers of the watch of the House for all its service and for all that is performed in it. 15. But the priests, the Levites, the sons of Zadok, who kept the charge of My sanctuary when the Children of Israel went astray from Me, they shall come near Me to minister to Me, and they shall stand before Me to offer Me fat and blood, says the Lord God. 16. They shall enter My Sanctuary, and they shall approach My Table to minister to Me, and they shall keep My charge.

Ezra criticizes the people. They allowed Gentiles into the Beit HaMikdash.

The Levites become the temple servants because they helped Israel do worship outside of the Temple. But the line of Zaduk kept the holiness and they will return to the work of the Cahunah.

And He said to the man clothed in linen, and He said, “Come between the wheels under the cherub, and fill your hands with fiery coals from the cherubim, and cast [them] upon the city,” and he came, before my eyes. 3. Now the cherubim were standing at the right of the House when the man came, and the cloud filled the inner court. 4. Then the glory of the Lord lifted itself from upon the cherub onto the threshold of the House, and the House was filled with the cloud, and the court was filled with the splendor of the glory of the Lord. 5. And the sound of the wings of the cherubim was heard until the outer court, like the voice of God Almighty when He speaks. 6. And it came to pass when He commanded the man clothed in linen, saying, “Take fire from between the wheels, from among the cherubim,” he came and stood beside the wheel. 7. And the cherub extended his hand from among the cherubim to the fire that was between the cherubim, and he picked [it] up and gave [it] into the hands of the one clothed in linen, and he took [it] and left.

Haggai 2:3-9

‘Speak now to Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and to Joshua the son of Jehozadak, the high priest, and to the remnant of the people, saying: 3 Who is left among you that saw this house in its former glory? and how do ye see it now? is not such a one as nothing in your eyes? 4 Yet now be strong, O Zerubbabel, saith the LORD; and be strong, O Joshua, son of Jehozadak, the high priest; and be strong, all ye people of the land, saith the LORD, and work; for I am with you, saith the LORD of hosts. 5 The word that I covenanted with you when ye came out of Egypt have I established, and My spirit abideth among you; fear ye not. {S} 6 For thus saith the LORD of hosts: Yet once, it is a little while, and I will shake the heavens, and the earth, and the sea, and the dry land; 7 and I will shake all nations, and the choicest things of all nations shall come, and I will fill this house with glory, saith the LORD of hosts. 8 Mine is the silver, and Mine the gold, saith the LORD of hosts. 9 The glory of this latter house shall be greater than that of the former, saith the LORD of hosts; and in this place will I give peace, saith the LORD of hosts.’

Ezekiel 16:6-9

  1. And I passed by you and saw you downtrodden with your blood, and I said to you, ‘With your blood, live,’ and I said to you, ‘With your blood, live.’ 7. Myriads, like the plants of the field I have made you, and you have increased and grown, and you have come with perfect beauty, breasts fashioned and your hair grown, but you were naked and bare. 8. And I passed by you and saw you, and behold your time was the time of love, and I spread My skirt over you, and I covered your nakedness, and I swore to you and came into a covenant with you, says the Lord, and you were Mine. 9. And I washed you with water, and I rinsed your blood off you, and I anointed you with oil.

God says, “You were an abandoned baby when I found you. And I lifed you up and raised you and made you beautiful. And then you grew up and I married you. And you have played the HARLOT!!!”

Q

What is Isaiah’s core message?

A

Israel has sinned by having a society that is corrupt and unjust. God spurns sacrifices. There will be a great destruction as punishment. Assyria is the instrument of that punishment. God will spare a remnant (Jerusalem). There will be reconciliation, salvation, in-gathering of exiles, re-establishment of Davidic kingship, and an era of universal peace.

Recurrent metaphor - God will bring low the mighty/haughty (cut down tall trees, knock down high mountains), and raise up the lowly (humble/poor).

1 Isaiah 1:11-18

Of what use are your many sacrifices to Me? says the Lord. I am sated with the burnt-offerings of rams and the fat of fattened cattle; and the blood of bulls and sheep and hegoats I do not want. When you come to appear before Me, who requested this of you, to trample My courts? You shall no longer bring vain meal-offerings, it is smoke of abomination to Me; New Moons and Sabbaths, calling convocations, I cannot [bear] iniquity with assembly. Your New Moons and your appointed seasons My soul hates, they are a burden to Me; I am weary of bearing [them]. And when you spread out your hands, I will hide My eyes from you, even when you pray at length, I do not hear; your hands are full of blood. Wash, cleanse yourselves, remove the evil of your deeds from before My eyes, cease to do evil. Learn to do good, seek justice, strengthen the robbed, perform justice for the orphan, plead the case of the widow. Come now, let us debate, says the Lord. If your sins prove to be like crimson, they will become white as snow; if they prove to be as red as crimson dye, they shall become as wool.

You can’t come and do sacrifices when you are corrupt and immoral. God doesn’t care about your sacrifices. Stop doing bad stuff. Learn to do good. If you do, all sin can be cleansed away.
