Q
What are the steps to solving a stoichiometry problem?
A
- Read and write out separately the knows and unknowns so it’s easier to see.
- Write out the reactants and the product. For aqueous be aware that you may have a double arrow reaction. For acid/base (neutralization) reactions the products will always include at least a salt and water.
- Figure out and balance the charges by using subscripts. Remember that gases exist as diatomic molecules.
- Increase coefficients to balance number of atoms/molecules.
- Make chart listing quantity of each individual atom on reactant and product side to make sure it’s balanced.
- Now you do dimensional analysis by listing what you have at the beginning and (?) unit of what you’re looking for, convert to moles if needed (remember atoms dictate reactions and moles are quantities of atoms), conversion factor of mol reactants/mol products, conversion factor to desired units, everything should cancel except for what you’re looking for.
