Random Flashcards
What are composites?
When two or more materials are combined by bonding.
-They have improved mechanical, functional and aesthetic properties.
What is a thermoplastic?
A material which once heated can be re-moulded into a variety of different shapes.
Properties of Thermosetting plastics?
- doesn’t melt
- can not be reversed
- can’t be recycled
Phosphorescent pigments
- Absorb light
- Release as a glow, slowly
Electricaluminescent lighting
- Changes electrical energy into light
- when electrical charge is applied phosphorus crystals are charged.
- Extremely low current with high voltage.
- There’s a low energy consumption.
key features of Quality Assurance (QA)
- Monitors all stages
- ensures customer satisfaction
- ensures product is at highest standard quality
- uses QC to monitor the product throughout.
Key features of 3D surface modelling
- To let the designer ‘feel’ what the product will look like.
- can see 360/all angles
- Automatically modify dimensions
- Saves physical modelling-> saves money
- Easier to work with than 2D modelling
- Enables client feedback -> easily transferred
Properties of polymers
- lightweight
- good strength to weight ratio
- strong/tough/ductile
- water resistant
- form intricate shapes
- easily printed on
- inexpensive
- recyclable
- shock reistant
- wide range of colour
- add to land fill
Properties of MDF
- Heavier than polymer -> high quality feeling
- equal strength in all directions
- doesn’t distort
- sustainable
- no grain
- easily laser cut
- durable -> longer life span
- inexpensive
What are smart materials?
They are materials which sense a change in the environment and respond to those conditions.
-Chromic materials radiate a colour, erase a colour or change it as a result of and external stimuli.
Encapsulation
- Has a border
- Waterproof
Lamination
- No border
- NOT waterproof
Thermochromic
Heat responsive
Photochromic
Optically responsive (UV light)
Solvatchromic
Change to liquid
