Q

Explain the forces during a steady flight.

A

The sun of the opposing forces is zero. The opposing forces are equal the effect of each other and therefore cancel each other out.

Q

What is form drag, skin friction drag and interference drag?

A

Form drag: is due to the aircraft’s shape and airflow around it. (Cowlings, antennas)

Skin friction: The aerodynamic resistance due to the contact of moving air with the surface of the aircraft (rivets, ridges)

Interference drag: Due to conflicting airstreams which cause turbulence and eddy currents. Occurs where surfaces of different characteristics meet.

Q

Both slats and flaps are high lift devices that changes the shape of the wing to generate more lift.

A

True.

Flaps and slats are secondary control devices usually used together. They are both retracted against the wing except for takeoff and landing.

Q

How are wing tip vortices formed?

A

When high-pressure air from beneath our wings sneaks around the end of the wing to the low pressure area on top.

Q

Wing tip vortices decay slowly. True or false?

A

True.

Because of this they are one of the main factors in defining safe separation minima.

Q

What is weight?

A

Weight is the force that pulls the aircraft downwards because of the force of gravity. It is the combined load of the aircraft itself, the crew, the fuel and the cargo.

Q

What is stability?

A

Stability is the tendency of an airplane in flight to remain in straight, level, upright flight and to return to this attitude, if displaced, without corrective action by the pilot.
