Random 1 Flashcards
What is air navigation?
The art of guiding an aircraft from one place to another and being able to fix its position when required.
List the basic types of air navigation
Pilotage
Dead reckoning
Radio Navigation
Celestial navigation
What is the purpose of air navigation?
To determine the position of an aircraft at any desired moment and to give its direction and distance to a desired destination.
What are the modern types of navigation?
• INS/ IRS
• GNSS
• PBN
• RNAV
• RNP
• FMS
What is the difference between the Inertial Navigation System (INS)
and Inertial Reference System (IRS)?
INS: a system that worked out where it is now in relation to where it started.
IRS: a system that expands on the capabilities of the INS by incorporating additional reference data. (Eg. GPS, navaids, air data) These additional external inputs help improve the accuracy and reliability of the navigation solution provided by the system.
What is “Dead Reckoning”?
A navigational technique dependent on using a known position and extrapolating a new position from that one by considering heading, speed, distance and time.
What is an Flight Management System (FMS) and it’s function ?
An FMS is a specialized computer system that automates a wide variety of in-flight tasks, reducing workload on the flight crew. Its main function is to enable flight crew to program a route from takeoff to landing.
What are the major components of GNSS?
Space segment
Control segment
User segment
What are the the names of the Global Navigation Satellite Systems for Russia, China and Europe?
Glonass, Beidou and Galileo
What are the components for the space segment?
GNSS satellites.
The process of the INS establishing a relationship between the aircraft frame and geographic reference is called…?
Alignment.
What is Area Navigation (RNAV)?
A means of navigation on a flight path from one point/ fix to another. It’s navigation specifications does NOT include a monitoring and alerting system.
What is Required Navigation Performance (RNP)?
Onboard navigation equipment that allows crew to fly an aircraft along a precise flight path and determine the aircraft position with exceptional accuracy. RNP has navigation specifications with a monitoring and alerting system.
What are the components of the control/ ground segment ?
A global network of ground facilities that track the GNSS satellites.
- master control stations
-data uploading stations
-monitor stations.
NDB, VOR, DME.
What are the components the user segment?
• The antenna
• The processing unit/ receiver
