Random 1 Flashcards

1
Q

What is the difference between transition altitude, level and layer?

A

Transition altitude: the altitude at or below which the vertical position of an aircraft is controlled by reference to altitudes.

Transition level: The lowest flight level available for use above the transition altitude.

Transition layer: The airspace between the transition altitude and the transition level.

Q

What are the characteristics of gas turbine and jet aircraft that are of particular concern to ATC?

A

a. High fuel consumption whilst taxiing and holding on the ground.

b. The fuel penalty incurred if climb to cruising level is delayed after take off.

c. The fuel penalty incurred by premature descent to a low level in preparation for approach and landing.

Q

What considerations should be taken for long distance flights?

A

a) ATC should permit flight to proceed on route/heading with as few turns as possible.

b) To climb to cruising level without restrictions as far as practicable.

c) Avoid excessive delay on the ground.

Q

What are the procedures for arriving aircraft?

A

Arriving aircraft may be required to report when
• Leaving or passing a significant point or navigation aid, or
• When starting procedure turn or base turn, or
• To provide other information required by the controller, to expedite departing and arriving aircraft.

Q

What are the procedures for arriving aircraft when conducting an Instrument approach?

A

• The approach control unit shall specify the instrument approach procedure to be used by arriving aircraft.

• A flight crew may request an alternative procedure and, if circumstances permit, should be cleared accordingly.

Q

What is ETA for IFR flights?

A

• Time estimated over designated point, defined by navigation aids, from which instrument approach procedure will be commenced.
Or, if no NAV aid…
• Time will arrive over the aerodrome.

Q

What are the procedures for arriving aircraft when Holding?

A

If an ACFT in an approach sequence request holding:

  1. The request to hold shall be approved.
  2. Clear ACFT to an adjacent fix for holding or placed at the top of the stack . (holding sequence).
  3. Co-ordination shall be effected with any adjacent ATC unit, as required.

Q

What are the procedures for arriving aircraft in regards to expected approach time?

A
  1. Determined for an arriving ACFT subjected to a delay of 10 min or more or such time as determined by the appropriate authority.
  2. Transmitted as soon as practical.
  3. Revised EAT shall be transmitted without delay whenever it differs 5 min or more. (or less when determined by the appropriate authority)
  4. Transmit by most expeditious means if 30 min or more holding.

Q

What should be coordinated between ATC and the flight crew, prior to dumping fuel within a CTA?

A

a) The route to be flown.

If possible, should be clear of cities and towns, preferably over water and away from areas where thunderstorms have been reported or are expected;

b) The level to be used.

should be not less than 6,000 ft. and…

c) The duration of the fuel dumping.

16
Q

What is “expected approach time?”

A

The time ATC expects that an arriving aircraft, following a delay, will leave the holding fix to complete its approach for a landing.

17
Q

Define VMC.

A

Visual meteorological conditions expressed in terms of visibility, distance from cloud and ceiling equal to or better than specified minima.

18
Q

What is the VMC minima?

A

At and above 3050m (10,000ft) AMSL:
Airspace class: A -G
flight visibility: 8km
Distance from cloud: 1,500 m horizontally, 300m (1,000ft) vertically

Below 3050m above 900m (10,000ft - 3000ft) AMSL or 1,000ft above terrain whichever is higher.
Airspace; A - G
Flight visibility: 5km
Distance from cloud: 1,500 m horizontally, 300m (1,000ft) vertically

At and below 900m (3,000ft) AMSL or 300m (1,000ft) above terrain, whichever is the higher.
Airspace A - E
Flight visibility: 5km
Distance from cloud: 1,500 m horizontally, 300m (1,000ft) vertically
Airspace F - G
Flight visibility: 5km
Distance from cloud: clear of cloud and with the surface in sight.

19
Q

Except when a clearance is obtained from an ATC unit, what are the conditions where VFR flights shall not take off or land at an aerodrome within a control zone or enter the aerodrome traffic zone or traffic pattern.

A

When the ceiling is less than 450m (1,500ft) OR when the ground visibility is less than 5km.

20
Q

True or False? Responsibility for a control of an aircraft shall be transferred from one ATC unit to another without the consent of the accepting control unit.

A

False. Shall not.
