RAM slots Flashcards
What are the pin sizes for SDRAM for desktops?
168 pin DIMM
What are the SDRAM pin sizes for laptops?
68 & 144 172 pin micro-DIMMs and 72, 144 or 200 pin Small Outline DIMM (SO-DIMM) All are 64 bits wide, except for the 72 pin 32 bit SO-DIMM
What are the pin sizes for RDRAM?
184 pin for desktops and 160 pin for laptops
What is a CRIMM?
Continuity RIMM, a device that terminates an empty RDRAM slot
What are the pin sizes for DDR SDRAM?
184 pin for desktops, 200 pin SO-DIMMs and 172 pin micro-DIMMs
Pin sizes for DDR2 SDRAM?
240 pin for desktops, 200 pin SO-DIMMs
Pin sizes for DDR3?
240 pin for desktops, 204 pin SO-DIMMS
What is a DIMM?
Dual inline memory module
What is parity RAM?
It was the first type of error correcting RAM, it used an additional bit to try to detect any RAM errors. It couldn’t detect all errors and could only tell the MCC that there was an error, not what the error was
What is ECC RAM?
It’s improved version of parity, it uses special code to detect when a bit is incorrect and fixes it on the fly. It needs a special MB to run properly.
How does ECC RAM differ from parity RAM.?
Parity can’t fix the errors, and it doesn’t always detect every error.
What’s the difference between double and single sided RAM?
Single sided (vast majority is single sided) has RAM chips on one side of the chip. Not all MBs support double sided RAM or sometimes they must be used in specific ways. Check your manual.
What is single vs double vs triple channel memory?
Dual channel RAM the CPU addresses each stick alternately by adding another communication channel to the RAM, triple channel increases the amount to three in a row, which theoretically doubles or triples the data transfer rate.
What is the DDR speed rating and PC speed rating on a stick of 100 MHz DDR SDRAM?
DRR200 and PC1600’ simply multiply the clock speed by two for the DDR, PC speed is the data throughput, which is the clock speed multiplied by 8 bytes, multiplied by the data rate. So, 100, x 8 x 2= pc1600
What is the DDR I/O speed, DDR2 speed rating and PC speed rating for 100 MHz DDR2 RAM?
DDR2 RAM doubled the I/O speed, so it would be 200 MHz, since it is double data rate, the DDR2 speed rating is DDR2-400’ and the PC speed rating is DDR2 speed rating x 8, so PC3200
