11
Q

Physical properties of ionic compounds

A

-High mp & bp as theres many strong electrostatic forces that require a lot of energy to overcome
-Mp determined by how strong the bond is ( smaller ion stronger bond & higher charge stronger bond)
-only conduct electricity when molten or aqueous
-can dissolve in water

Q

Metallic bond

A

-merge outershells and share electrons
-lattice of positively charged metal ions attracted to a sea of delocalised electrons
-more delocalised electrons = stronger bond
-higher ionic charge = stronger bond
-Small atomic radius = stronger bond

Q

Properties of metals

A

-good conduction of electricity due to delocalised electrons carrying it
- high mp and bp due to strong attraction hard to overcome
-Malleable as ions can slide over eachother

Q

Dative covalent bonding

A

-Atom donating electrons will have a lone pair of electrons
-Atom receiving electrons has a vacant orbital
- bond represented with an arrow instead of a line

Q

Electronegativity

A

The power if an atom to attract the pair of electrons in a covalent bond
-increases as you go to the right if the periodic table
-increases as you go up the table

17
Q

Electronegativity explained

A

Each element given a number based on nuclear charge atomic radius and number of principal energy levels. F is highest (4.0) anything near it is also high
