RAM Flashcards
Name RAM
Random Access Memory
Name DIMM
Dual In-line Memory Module
What is different about the electrical contacts on DIMM?
There are duel electrical contacts and are both different on each side.
What is the data width of a single DIMM?
64 Bit
Name SO-DIMM
Small Outline Dual In-line Memory Module
Name DRAM
Dynamic Random Access Memory
What is DRAM
The memory modules found on the DIMM
What is the key factor of DRAM
Need constant refreshing. If not the data in the memory disappears
Why is it Random Access Memory?
Any storage location can be accessed directly
What does the S in SDRAM stand for?
Synchronous
What does SDRAM do?
Synchronizes its processes with the common system clock. Queues one process while waiting for another.
Name SDR
Single Data Rate
Name DDR
Double Data Rate
How much data can SDR process in One Clock Cycle?
1 data block
How much data can DDR process in One Clock Cycle?
2 data blocks
Maximum size of DDR4 per DIMM?
64 GB per DIMM
Are DDR, DDR2, DDR3 and DDR4 backwards compatible?
No. The keys on the modules are in different spots on the DIMMs
What does Parity Memory do?
Adds an additional parity bit.
Won’t always detect and error.
Can’t correct errors
What is ECC memory?
Error Correcting Code
What does ECC memory do?
Detects errors and corrects them on the fly
Can you use ECC on any system?
No. Confirm the motherboard can support it.
