“jacks in charge of the choir. What do you want them to be?
“he undid the snake-clasp of his belt…and stood there naked”
-The jungle is an allusion to the Garden of Eden,
-Ralph taking off his clothes is an allusion to the naked innocence of Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden
-the green shadows on Ralph’s skin and the belt’s “snake-clasp” are an allusion to Satan, who appears as a snake in the Garden of Eden.
“Piggy! Piggy!”
-Ralph’s exclamatory sentence in response to piggy’s vulnerability shows a lack of empathy
-key qualitiy that is needed to be a strong leader
-Instead of asking him for his real name, he participates in mockery.
“the fire was dead”
-The short sentence implies the fire was a symbol of hope and rescue
-Ralph failure to keep the signal fire going represents a failure in his leadership
-the ultimate irony is that Ralph’s loss in leadership caused the rescue in the end as jacks fire to kill Ralph got the attention of the navy.
“Ralph launched himself like a cat”
-This imagery draws a comparison between Ralph’s actions and the agility of a cat, overall Golding conveys a sense of panic and quickness
-Ralph was supposed to be a symbol of strength
- through the novel his character changes, he begins to mirror the descent into savagery by participating in Simon’s death and failing to prevent the group from falling into savagery.
-Now he finds himself being hunted by the very group he failed to guide.
“jacks in charge of the choir. What do you want them to be?
Ralph foolishly allows Jack to be in charge of his own choir.
This backfires on Ralph as Jack is power hungry and turns his choir into a malicious tribe.
Ralph allowing jack to be in charge of a group suggest that ralph does not have authority for certain groups, demonstrating a flaw in his leadership.
This overall foreshadows the hunters having the more power than ralph.
