- Osborne attempts to warn Raleigh about Stanhope, ‘You see, he’s been out here a long time. It -it tells on a man - rather badly’
- When Osbourne hears Raleigh is going on the raid: ‘Oh. [There is another pause.] Why Raleigh?‘

- “Do you want me to go up?” – Raleigh is asking if he should go out to the attack
- “Yes. Keen to get out here.” - Explaining his choice to come fight
- “I say Dennis, don’t you wait - if - if you want to be getting on.” - While on his deathbed, Raleigh refuses to be a burden on Stanhope.

- [suddenly brightening up] at the mention of Stanhope
- ‘He looked splendid! It - sort of - made me feel - … Keen to get out here’
- When Osborne asks Raleigh if he knows Stanhope, Raleigh explains how they know each other from school and says, ‘I was only a kid and he was one of the big fellows…’
- In the letter Raleigh says, ‘I’m awfully proud to think he’s my friend’ and ‘He hardly ever sleeps in the dugout, he’s always up in the front-line with the men … like he did the kids at school’

Failure to understand Stanhope

- When Osborne tries to warn Raleigh about the change in Osborne he simply says, • ‘[laughing] Oh, I know old Dennis’s temper!’
- Raleigh is confused to why Stanhope is celebrating about Osborne’s death and says, ‘And yet you can sit here and drink champagne’
- Stanhope loses his temper explaining, ‘My god! You bloody little swine! You think I don’t care’ and ‘To forget, you little fool – to forget!’

Stanhope’s feeling for Raleigh
A
- Stanhope describes the way in which he thinks Raleigh looked at him upon seeing him drunk, “he looked at me as if I’d hit him between the eyes- - as if I’d spat on him-”
- Stanhope demands “give me that letter!”
- [there is a silence for a moment, broken by Osborne..]
- Tells Osborne, “I knew you’d like him. Personality, isn’t it?”
