rainforesty bois Flashcards
Adaptations of plants (canopy plant types)
Epiphytes (canopy)
- plants that grow on trees to receive more sunlight
Lianas (canopy)
- thick, woody vines that grow on the ground & twine up trees for sunlight
Structure of TRF
Undergrowth layer (20m)
- dark bc most sun rays blocked by other layers
Canopy layer (30m)
- crowns of trees from an almost continuous layer
Emergent layer (50m)
- some trees grow up to 50m/80m rising through canopy & towering above other trees
Adaptations of plants (leaves)
Drip tips
- narrow, downward-pointing tips to allow water to run off easily
Waxy/Hairy/Leathery surfaces of leaves
- minimise the loss of moisture through transpiration due to high temperatures
Adaptation of plants (trunks & branches)
Tall, straight trunks
- branches spread out near the top of trees to obtain the maximum amount sunlight
Smooth barks
- allows rainwater to flow easily from crown to roots of trees
Adaptation of plants (roots)
Buttress roots
- large roots to support the heavy weight of tall trees
Shallow roots
- nutrients found mostly in top layer of soil because of rapid decomposition of leaves and branches
Adaptation of plants (fruits & flowers)
Fruits and flowers
- colourful & strong-smelling to attract insects & other animals for dispersal/pollination
