Rainforests, Adaptaions, And Climate Flashcards
What’s epiphytes?
Air plants or epiphytes forget about riots and perch up high on branches
What are ferns?
Species like ferns solved the problem by adapting to life in shade. There’s no flowers, to save energy and there’s large leaves, green all year round, to trap as much sunlight as possible
What are buttress roots?
The tallest trees have developed huge butress roots (huge roots) yo stop they toppling over
What’s do thick waxy coats on leaves protect them from?
Rain and insects
Why do some leaves have sharp edges?
To keep Hungary things away
What does the drip tip on leaves do?
Let’s rain off
What are the four different layers in a rainforest?
Shrub layer, under-canopy, canopy and emergent
How tall is the tales emergent?
12 times as big as a house
What does indigenous mean?
Native in other words you can trace your ancestors back 100’s maybe 1000’s of years
How are rubber tappers using the rainforest?
In a sustainable way because they are not chopping down the trees they only score the bark in order to extract the rubber
What do the indigenous people practice?
Subsistence farming which means they grow food for their families and any surplus is sold in the market
What’s lianas?
Thick vibes just loop around tree trunks to reach sunlight
What does equatorial climate mean?
Equatorial climate is hot and wet, found 5 degrees either side of the equator. This is due to the angle of earth facing the sun. The equator is always in the sun so this causes tropical rainforest to grow along it
What is convectional rainfall
.
It’s when the land warms up, it heats the air above it. This causes the air to expand and rise. As the air rises it cools and condenses. If this process continues rain will fall, it’s common across tropical areas
What’s subsistence farming?
Subsistence agriculture is a self-sufficing in which the farmers focus on growing enough food for them and their families. The output is mostly for local requirements with little or no surplus for trade
