rainforests Flashcards
(34 cards)
What are the different layers of the rain forest in order from bottom to top?
Shrub level, under canopy, canopy, emergent.
Describe the climate of a rain forest.
It’s warm and wet.
Is the diversity in a rain forest varied or not?
It is.
What is the rainfall like in a rain forest?
It rains over 2000 mm per year.
What is the average daily temperature of a rain forest?
28 degrees C.
How many seasons are there in a rain forest?
None.
Is the soil in a rain forest fertile?
The soil is not fertile.
What happens to the nutrients in the soil?
They get washed away because o the heavy rainfall.
What are Lianas?
They are tall plants that have their roots in the ground but climb up trees to reach sunlight.
Where do the Liana’s flowers grow?
In the canopy layer.
Why are tree trunks tall and thin?
To allow trees to reach the sunlight.
Why is the bark on tree trunks smooth?
To allow water to flow down to the roots.
Why do plants have “drip tips”?
To allow water to flow off the leaves without damaging them.
What are “drip tips”?
Leaves with pointy tips.
What are “buttress roots”?
Roots that have ridges to create a large surface area.
Why do “buttress roots” have a large surface area?
So they can support larger trees.
Where do Epiphytes live?
On the branches of trees in the canopy layer.
How do epiphytes get their nutrients?
They get their nutrients from the air and water, not from the soil.
Why does the Sloth use camouflage?
To make it difficult for predators to spot them.
Why does the spider monkey have long, strong limbs?
To help it climb through the trees.
What does the flying frog use to glide between plants?
Fully webbed hands and feet and a flap of loose skin.
Why does the Toucan have a large bill?
To cur fruit from branches that are too weak to support its weight.
Name one threat to the tropical rain forest
Deforestation
What are the different reasons for deforestation?
Farming, logging, mining, roads, hydroelectric power, population
